Zonal Geranium Tango Deep Rose With Eye
The Geranium of the Year 2020 has been chosen mainly for its unique flower. If you look closely at the flower, you will see that the eye is white with delicate pink stripes. The petals then turn almost red to be framed by a lighter edge. This gives the flower a nice depth and the color changes are beautiful, both up close and from a distance.
This year’s presenter is Gunnar Kaj. Gunnar is a flower creator and he has done many appreciated flower exhibitions both in Sweden and abroad. Gunnar is very fond of geraniums, mainly because he thinks they are such nice flowers.
– The 2020 Geranium of the Year is the zonal geranium Tango Deep Rose With Eye. It is an adorable single flowering geranium in intense colors, and the name makes you want to dance tango! reveals Gunnar Kaj.
– I mostly have geraniums indoors, but I think this variety is even better outdoors. It’s an intense color that brightens up and looks great in the garden, Gunnar says.
Withstands both rain and wind
Tango Deep Rose With Eye is an excellent choice for outdoors, as it is very rain-resistant. Even if the summer is rainy and wet, the variety blooms profusely and continuously, and is not damaged by the wind.
– I think geraniums are wonderful because they are such gentle flowers. You can leave them for a week without them complaining. Even if mine dry out and are forgotten during the winter, they respond immediately when they get love and care again. I have about 20 geraniums that get poor care during the winter, yet they take off as soon as I start working on them. My old faithfuls are no great shakes, but to me they are old friends that I am always happy to see again,” says Gunnar.
Every year a new variety is added to Gunnar’s collection and this year it will be Tango Deep Rose With Eye. Even geraniums need new friends.
– I am fond of both the flower and actually also the name itself. I’m quite good at ballroom dancing, but maybe not tango. Now I’m keen to learn, especially the queer tango, a variation where everyone can lead and everyone can dance with everyone. While waiting to be able to socialize and dance again, may this year’s Geranium be my dancing friend!
THE JURY’S MOTIVATION:
The jury for Geranium of the Year includes Jonas Samuelsson from LRF Trädgård/Prydnadsväxter, Klaus Thingholm from Syngenta, Lotta Ahlvar, trend analyst and Patrik Vilsmyr from Mäster Grön.
This year’s selected Geranium is a veritable color explosion.
Look at the depth – with its simple flowers in three colors, a three-dimensional design language is created from the whitest to the deepest and richest dark pink.
On a windowsill or in a balcony box – equally suitable for this all-weather Geranium.
This year’s selection is called Tango Deep Rose With Eye.
Care
Tango Deep Rose With Eye is mainly suitable for outdoor use, for example in the entrance pot, balcony box or planted in the border. Until the weather is mild and the nights are frost-free, the variety also looks good inside on the windowsill, in the conservatory or in another frost-free and bright place.
To do this:
When you get your geraniums home, they may need to be replanted. Look at the roots and see how they look. Choose a pot/box/pot with a good volume and a good quality soil. It is important to add nutrients to the soil, as geraniums develop best when they are well nourished. The easiest way to do this is to water with a weak nutrient solution at each watering.
– Water regularly, but always allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. It’s best to water geraniums in the morning so that they have time to dry out during the day. If this is not possible, watering them in the evening works well.
Watering in the middle of the day is less appropriate because much of the water evaporates immediately. Geraniums cope very well with drought, but they do not develop as well as when watered regularly.
– Geraniums love light and want to be in a bright and airy place. If you are planting several geraniums together, or planting geraniums together with other plants, be careful not to plant the plants too close together. They will grow together over time and will benefit from a little airiness at first. Always place geraniums in a bright position!
– Be diligent about pinching off wilted flowers, preferably before they set seed, although the seed pod itself is a beautiful and amusing decoration – it looks like a grosbeak. Geranium means big beak.
