Leif Blomqvist's top tips
Autumn planting like a pro
How to succeed with fall planting. Get stronger roots and less watering in return.

Planting in the fall gives plants a calm start and better conditions for spring
One person who knows how much autumn has to offer is Leif Blomqvist, a well-known cultivation expert with many years of experience of plants that can cope with the climate throughout Sweden. He has run Blomqvist Nursery in Ostrobothnia for over 35 years – a favorite among gardening enthusiasts looking for hardy trees, shrubs and fruit plants. Here Leif shares his best tips, advice and fall favorites.
Warm soil and stronger roots
One of the biggest advantages of planting in the fall is what happens below the soil surface.
– The soil stays warm well into late autumn, allowing root formation to continue. This means that the plants are better equipped when spring – and the dry early summer weeks – arrive,” explains Leif.
In addition, the soil “settles” nicely around the roots in the fall, creating good contact between plant and soil.
In Finland, fall has become a given
In Finland, planting in the fall is more common than in Sweden. Leif believes this is the result of long-term cooperation between the industry and the media.
– They have been working for a long time to encourage fall planting, which has had an effect. It’s about changing habits – but also about daring to try.
Best plants to plant this fall?
Leif doesn’t hesitate when asked to choose his three favorites:
– Blueberry bushes, roses and fruit trees. They are all hardy, beautiful and give a lot back – both to the eye and the taste.
But he highlights one particular plant in particular:
– Blueberrystry is perfect for October. When planted in spring, it often stops growing if there is a short dry spell – but if you plant in October, it will grow again without any problems.

For those who hesitate
For those who want to plant in the fall but are unsure, Leif has good advice:
– Professionals prefer to plant in the fall. You don’t have to worry as much about watering, and the plant has more time to establish itself in spring. It’s an easy way to gain half a growing season!
The most beautiful fruit tree
– The pear tree, says Leif directly. “With its stunning blossom, it is clearly the most beautiful fruit tree. And today there are many new varieties that can survive up to zone 5-6 – thanks to the expanded range that is now available.
